Bioextraction technology to create bioplastics PHA
Bioplastic polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a group of polymers with wide applicability that can replace several of the most used fossil-based plastics, including polythene, polypropylene and polyurethane. It is 100% biobased as well as biodegradable in both soil, marine, aerobic and anaerobic environments. However, they are relatively expensive to produce using existing methods. Through the implementation of Bioextrax’s production technology, the cost of PHAs can be halved, making it competitive with fossil-based alternatives, while also making the production process more environmentally friendly.
PHAs are microbiologically accumulated polyesters and are environmentally friendly substitutes to fossil-based polymers. They have similar material properties as polypropylene (PP), one of the most widely used polymers in the plastics industry. Moreover, they are biocompatible and water resistant with broad applications in polymer industry and medicine. Further, they are carbon neutral, biodegradable and do not release any toxins while being degraded.
