Melamine decomposes and releases nitrogen gas when burned, this can act as a blowing agent to form a foam below the intumescent layer. This increases the volume and improves stability, protecting the underlying fuel. In addition to this, the decomposition of melamine is endothermic, reducing the heat of the system. It is usually used in combination with another phosphorus source e.g. ammonium polyphosphate as the synergistic properties will result in improved intumescence and fire retardency.

Alternative should replace

Melamine; CAS 108-78-1.
