Bio-based and biodegradable thermoplastic resins made from lignin

Summary

Mobius has created a technology platform for bio-based, naturally degradable and compostable materials that serve as drop-in replacements for petroleum-based resins. Mobius envisions a future where forestry, food, and agricultural waste streams are upcycled into valuable chemical and material feedstock.

Description

The compostable and in-soil degradable material technology uses lignin, the second most abundant natural biopolymer in the world and primary waste product of biorefineries and paper mills, as low-cost primary feedstock. When placed in soil or compost, the material break down into water, carbon dioxide, and stable humic matter rich in humic and fulvic acids that may improve soil health.

With the solvent-free and zero-waste process, mobius can tune the materials composition, mechanical properties, and degradation characteristics, allowing customers to choose form a range of products dedicated to specific needs.

Applications:

Future applications for these products include:

  • Thermoplastic materials for plantable horticultural and nursery containers
  • Thermoplastic materials for plastic mulch films

Possible replacement to

LDPE, HDPE, PP, PS
